Marvel Rivals players are furious over changes to the reporting system. Now, you are no longer able to cite hate speech as the reason you are reporting another player, as the option for it has been completely removed.
This has been discovered as Marvel Rivals players dive back into the game for season 10. Those who have tried to report players for racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of bigotry in voice and text chat have been shocked to discover that the option is no longer there, something we were able to verify. Bizarrely, you can report gore content, as of the latest update, which is almost definitely much less of a problem in-game.
A clip of a player trying to report a player for racially abusing them in voice chat has gone viral, tipping many off to the changes made to the report system. Here, we can see that the option is gone from both the voice chat abuse and text chat abuse tabs.
In its absence, it would seem that the only applicable tag is toxic content or inappropriate language. However, this is much weaker wording, and if it's getting lumped in with rude, but not necessarily bigoted speech, then there's a real fear that it won't be taken as seriously as it should.
Fans are calling out NetEase for the move, arguing that Marvel Rivals needs to clamp down on bigots in text and voice chat, rather than make it easier for them to get off the hook. I think anyone who has played a match can attest to how toxic it can get, as with any online shooter. In fact, many companies are always looking for ways to improve their moderation systems, not take features away.
To make matters worse, this comes as NetEase itself has come under fire for racist content in the game. A new spray for Emma Frost appears to depict her as a Pharaoh with two shirtless Black men tending to her. And that comes shortly after fans were already discussing how NetEase dishes out more complex skins to White characters. NetEase had tried to address the latter by upgrading a recent Storm skin to a Legendary.
Looking back at moderation, these changes to how we report other players come alongside NetEase rolling out harsher punishments for leavers and throwers. I am sure that will come as a relief to many, but it hardly had to come at the expense of softening the reports for bigots.
