Back in early July, I was invited to the FortySeven offices in Los Angeles to be part of the first group of journalists in North America to be able to go hands-on with the upcoming global version of Roco Kingdom. If you haven’t heard of this one yet, it’s easy to look at a trailer and think, “Oh, it’s open-world Pokémon.”
And well, that’s only partially true. On the one hand, it is absolutely a monster collecting and battling RPG, much like what Nintendo has made their bread and butter with over the last couple of decades. But Roco Kingdom really is taking the formula and seemingly bringing it places that Game Freak hasn’t even dreamed of (or at least bothered with) yet.
This means that if you’re someone that loves Pokémon, but perhaps is looking for something different, something that might offer you a little more in the modern gaming landscape, Roco Kingdom very well might be for you.
In my session, I got to play a full tutorial section that introduced me to the game, and then was also set free into the game’s open world to get a taste of everything it has to offer. As a fan of monster collection games, I came away with a lot to be excited about.
Roco Kingdom, created by Chinese dev team Morefun Studios, has actually been around for 20 or so years at this point. Originally a web-based game only, the title saw a lot of success and growing popularity in its local region dating back to the 2000s. Now, the IP has been brought to the world of the free-to-play gacha-type, and it’s actually already been out in China since March of 2026. On Day One, this revamped take on the franchise amassed a whopping 15 million players immediately, and it’s since grown to have a playerbase of around 30 million.
As someone that is admittedly not plugged into China-only free-to-play game releases, these figures were staggering to me, and really started to highlight that Roco Kingdom really could be something special once it soon goes global.
In the game, you collect creatures called Jinies, and the game already boasts more than 400 (and none are paywalled despite some of the gacha-ness here). You’ll catch them with a spherical item called a Buddy Pod (think Poké Ball), train them, bond with them, and battle them against other mages and witches at the magical school you’ve just started attending. There’s also a much grander story that we got some hints about in our preview session, full of actual cutscenes and with really nice voiceover work.
