Boruto Officially Unveils The New Pain After 17 Years

In the world of Naruto, created by the legendary mangaka Masashi Kishimoto, Pain stands unequivocally as one of the greatest villains ever. In fact, Pain's reputation is such that he is widely considered to be one of the greatest antagonists in anime and manga. While Pain ended up falling in chapter 449 of the manga, which was released in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #27 on June 15, 2009, he inspired a generation of new villains, one of which belongs to the Boruto series as well.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has its own Pain in the form of Jura, who was officially unveiled to us in chapter 4 on November 19, 2023. Since then, Jura has been consistently developed, and right now, he is the only villain who resembles Pain from the original story and is becoming more compelling with each passing chapter.

Pain was one of the most dangerous villains in the Naruto series, but what made him especially compelling was the fact that he was seeking the same peace as Naruto Uzumaki, only in a twisted, different way. Pain had experienced tremendous loss and grief throughout his lifetime and had seen his country being ravaged by wars fought by other countries. To that end, he wanted to design a system which saw peace being preserved eternally, as that is what the Akatsuki was formed for under him. While Pain, originally Nagato, was essentially being manipulated by the likes of Obito Uchiha, his goals were still to bring peace to the entire world. By sharing his own pain with everyone, he believed that everyone could understand each other, and by distributing Tailed Beasts across countries, he believed fear would become a strong enough weapon to preserve peace for a long time.

Everyone feels the same pain when losing what's precious. You and I have both experienced that pain. You strive for your justice, and I for mine. — Pain explains his ideology to Naruto

Now, in Boruto, we have a new Pain in the form of Jura, who was officially introduced to us in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 4, when the Shinju first awoke. In this chapter, which was released on November 19, 2023, little was shown of Jura, but as more time passed, it became known that Jura was extremely curious about human nature and life itself. Jura and Pain are somewhat different in the sense that he doesn't seek true peace or want to enforce his ideas upon the world. However, Jura still seeks the reason for his own existence. At the same time, he seeks the answer to what love truly is. Jura does not want to destroy people. In fact, he has already visited Konoha on multiple occasions and even established certain bonds with various vendors in the village. Jura does not seek death and destruction without purpose but is a constantly evolving character who is extremely layered. In creating him, Mikio Ikemoto and Masashi Kishimoto have created the perfect successor for Pain by adding a unique twist to the original character.

The primary reason why Jura stands as the perfect successor to Pain is because of his compelling character arc that allows fans to understand his point of view to a certain extent. The same was true for Pain as well. Although Pain was a villain, he too was harmed as he grew up, and his country was destroyed. Pain was as much a victim as he was an aggressor, and that is why he decided to break this cycle by creating an era where countries would fear war once and for all. Pain was doing what he thought was just, and Jura is somewhat similar.

“What is love? My current opinion is that it can be a fatal weakness for you humans, a flaw...that is a side effect of being highly intelligent. Yet it makes you stronger!” — Jura shows similarities to Pain, Two Blue Vortex

Jura was thrust into the world by none other than Code, who wanted to use the Tailed Beast for his own good. Now that these Ten-Tails have sentience and can make decisions for themselves, they no longer want to follow orders or the instinct to attack the nearest source of chakra. These human Tailed Beasts are, for the first time, thinking for themselves and for the reason of their existence. Jura, in particular, is perplexed not just by the reason for his existence but the concept of love and why humans are willing to go to extreme lengths for it. Jura himself is starting to experience this love, and the loss of this love is surely going to trigger an evolution in him, which we are eagerly waiting to see. All things considered, Jura is the perfect replacement for Pain, as his character arc adds a certain philosophical touch to the Boruto series that it was certainly lacking in the past.
