Grand Theft Auto has a special legacy when it comes to strip clubs and similar adult locations, often sitting somewhere between an open-world distraction, a one-off giggle visit, or one of the stranger places to spend time in a GTA game. With GTA 6's return to Vice City, it's obvious that these locations are once again part of the world Rockstar is building.
This time around, it seems Rockstar is focusing on not just expanding the feature set of strip clubs, but the people who populate them. Rockstar has spent a lot of extra time on NPCs for GTA 6, with one of its studios specifically working on them, ensuring that they all look and move differently. It almost goes without saying, but unique movements and looks are going to greatly impact GTA 6 locations where those elements are key appeals.
Older Grand Theft Auto games had to put limits on how different NPCs could be because characters with different proportions often needed to use the same animation sets. GTA 6 has a solution to that problem. Rockstar studio co-lead Rob Nelson told IGN that the game can now retarget animations on the fly, allowing characters with different heights and body shapes to use animations that better fit their individual proportions. In other words, strippers won't follow a few simple stock models and will instead come with varied body shapes, various heights, and so forth. As Nelson explained,
"NPCs have more height differentiation and body shape differentiation than ever before; we could never have had this variety before because different body types had to share animation sets...the team worked out a system where they now retarget those animations on the fly. Now we have a huge variety of heights and shapes, and it all works together because of what this team was able to pull off."
For GTA 6's strip clubs, this tech means they are more populated than ever, they do not have simple variations of the same character model at all times, and their dance routines are less static and more natural to the performer. The animation system can account for different body types and heights while characters move around and interact with their surroundings, regardless of the specific location. Rockstar specifically described the technology as useful for things like fighting, getting into cars, and environmental interactions, with the same underlying system giving GTA 6 more flexibility with its NPCs in dense environments.
Body variety is only part of what Rockstar is changing. GTA 6 can also use different body builds, clothing, face shapes, hairstyles, and expressions to make its characters more distinct. In a location like a strip club, where the player can spend time around the same group of NPCs, those differences could help keep the environment from feeling like a collection of duplicated characters. It's common in a sports game to look into a crowd and see repeat NPCs, but it seems Rockstar is wanting to move as far away from that "fill-in" NPC approach as much as possible.
Rockstar has also previously noted that neither GTA 6 co-protagonist Jason nor Lucia would get jealous of the other for visiting strip clubs.
None of this confirms specific new strip club activities or interactions in GTA 6, but there's a good chance Rockstar keeps those under wraps until GTA 6's release date. What is confirmed is that GTA 6 can create a much wider range of characters than previous games while making their animations work across those different bodies, and that bodes well for its strip clubs. For a series that has always filled its strangest locations with NPCs, strip clubs could be another place where that technology becomes a game-changer.
