I never got quite as invested in the well-being of my characters in games until I played the Fire Emblem series and experienced permadeath. It was brutal to introduce us to characters we adored, and then have them get taken away by the slash of a sword or a well-timed arrow to the heart.
Even though the series has fluctuated in terms of overall difficulty, there are still many Fire Emblem games that make losing a character feel truly devastating; be it because of how hard it was to survive endless battles, or even just because the character was one of our favorites.
The games in this list are ranked mostly according to my own preferences, since I'm a longtime fan who has played all the Fire Emblem games that came to the West. Difficulty also played a huge role in the ranking, so the farther we get on this list, the more you can count on the games being truly challenging.
I can already hear complaints about Fire Emblem: Awakening even being on this list, but bear with me. While it is true that this was one of the easier games in the series, it's also one of the most popular. More importantly, it featured a really engaging cast of characters, perhaps more than any other game in the series.
As such, even though Fire Emblem: Awakening isn't what I would call super difficult, my love for each of the heroes and heroines made it brutal to lose any of them. Whether that was an airheaded viking like Vaike, or my dark mistress Tharja, I didn't want to lose anyone to the vicissitudes of war.
For what it's worth, even though the base difficulty in this game is pretty minor, it's also a lot different on the harder difficulties. This is one of the only Fire Emblem games I've played on various difficulties, often re-classing extensively to have a shot at survival.
It's true that Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones isn't all that hard, though, in fairness, it evolved the series in a lot of novel ways. It brought in the ability to grind to gain experience outside of story battles. It also introduced monster units, such as truly gigantic spiders, undead soldiers, and all manner of demonic critters.
