Since there are more PS5s out there than Xbox Series X|S consoles, it stands to reason that more people have pre-ordered GTA 6 on PlayStation than they have on Xbox. However, a report this week claiming GTA 6 pre-orders are heavily skewed in PlayStation’s favor rubbed some at Xbox the wrong way, so much so that the studio’s CSO has publicly responded.
Claims that GTA 6 pre-orders are skewed in the PS5’s favor were part of a wider report Tom Warren published at The Verge covering this week’s Xbox “reset”. Xbox CSO Matthew Ball focused in on the GTA 6 part of that report, replying to Warren on Twitter to make it clear that he and everyone at Xbox are “very happy” with the platform’s GTA 6 numbers.
“The title is breaking records for Xbox, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall,” Ball writes in a reply to Warren’s report. “Our internal analysis shows our share of pre-orders to be matching our share of the console market.”
Ball probably should have stopped at the breaking records part, as it’s the second half of his tweet that’s now getting the most attention. Warren has responded asking exactly what Xbox’s share of the console market looks like. At the time of typing this, Ball has not replied to that tweet.
Assuming Ball is simply referring to how many Series X|S consoles have been sold compared to PS5s, then Xbox’s current share of the console market - at least when it comes to consoles on which you’ll be able to play GTA 6 at launch - is just shy of 27%. That’s based on the latest figures we have from each company, which have the PS5 currently at 95.3 million sold, while the Series X|S is sitting on 35 million.
Rough estimates again, but if that’s the console share Ball is referring to, then we can assume for every three copies of GTA 6 pre-ordered on PS5, one has been pre-ordered on Xbox. Some people might frame a three-to-one ratio as skewed in PlayStation’s favor. Others, like Ball, would disagree, arguing that, since PlayStation’s console base is three times bigger, GTA 6 selling three times more copies on PS5 isn’t skewed at all - it’s exactly what you’d expect.
Unless Ball responds to Warren’s follow-up with figures, which seems unlikely, it’s hard to know for sure whether GTA 6 pre-orders are being outnumbered by more than a rate of three-to-one when comparing PlayStation and Xbox. Ball’s response also implies he and Xbox know how many GTA 6 pre-orders have been placed on PS5. While it might well be breaking records on Xbox, there’s no way of knowing how big a slice of the GTA 6 pie Xbox currently has unless it also knows how much of that pie PS5 is getting too.
