Valve has officially unveiled the pricing and sales date for its Steam Frame virtual reality headset. The announcement comes months after two of the three new pieces of Valve hardware, namely the Steam Machine and Steam Controller, were fully unveiled and put on sale.
Although gamers have been left waiting for movement on the Steam Frame, it's far from the first time that Valve has entered the virtual reality market. In the 2010s, Valve worked with HTC to produce the HTC Vive, and went on to produce its own Valve Index in 2019. The Steam Frame looks to build upon that experience in a number of ways, including improved technical specifications, inside-out tracking, and the option to use the device without a physical connection to a PC.

Additionally, the Steam Frame has had a number of accessories unveiled. The same charger that comes with the Steam Deck will be compatible with the Steam Frame, and any 45W USB-C charger should work, but buyers can pick one up for $29 if they need it. The Steam Frame Ergonomic Accessories Kit will cost $59, which comes with two hand straps for the controllers, a top strap for the headset, and an extended light blocker. If users need replacements for the gasket, cushion, or light blocker, all three can be picked up for $49. These items are all notably limited to accounts that actually purchase the Steam Frame, so they also won't be easily hoarded. Further, Valve has revealed that prescription lens inserts that will let users wear the headset without their glasses will be available from Zenni, while buying an Arcturus Vision Camera will let users utilize 5K HDR color passthrough and spatial video capture with their new headsets.
At the moment, it remains to be seen if Valve can meaningfully break into the virtual reality market again, especially with the Steam Frame priced much higher than its major competitor, the Meta Quest. Fans should have a better idea of the popularity of the device by the end of the week when the reservation queue is opened.
