In my experience, the few minutes a live band take between songs to recover a bit before plunging into the next riff are generally quite uneventful. At the most, you might get an amusing story about what they've been up to in your city prior to getting on stage, chatter about the song they're about to play, or some light comedy night-esque crowd work. Or, if you attended a recent gig American rockers Breaking Benjamin played in Holmdel, New Jersey, a four minute promo segment for a Fallout 4 mod made by a lead singer who's been left frustrated by some modding community drama.
"I am an amateur modder," the band's frontman Benjamin Burnley revealed during a mid-gig pause filmed by a Reddit user with the fitting handle im_all_ears. "I make mods for Skyrim and Fallout 4...I just made a mod, it's an F4SE plugin, DLL native plugin, that makes it so that when you're in first person, you stay in first person. You see your body in first person, you go into a workshop in first person." Ok, so far, so slightly unexpected but perfectly normal admission.
Burnley then implored his audience to go and download that mod, making clear that he had a specific reason for using this platform to ask folks there to see music if they wouldn't mind grabbing a creation that lets Fallout 4's protagonist look down and check their crotch still exists. "There was a modder — so, there’s like a clique - there was a modder in the community that was really mean to me and bullying me, saying ‘Oh, your mod is shit, you don’t know what you’re fucking doing'. So, I'm doing this shit announcing [my mod] every fucking night and blowing his fucking downloads out of the water. Please help me destroy this fucking jerk. I’m not even gonna say his name, but he’s a dick and fuck him and download my fucking mod."
First of all, it's obviously not very nice when people are mean to each other on the internet. Second of all, oh mate. If the modder Burnley beefed with was trolling him, odds are they're loving that their efforts have seemingly led to rants across multiple gigs from a celebrity they've clearly succeeded in cheesing off. Burnley even got one of the gig's crew to put the name of his mod, True First Person, up on the big screen, before continuing to promote it by revealing that he was planning on pushing an update for it live. Just over three minutes into the clip, a member of the audience shouts "Play some music!"
To be honest, that's the biggest issue I have here. Burnley should surely have channeled all of his emotion into a tune about Fallout 4 modding drama. He could have called it Script Extender for a Jester's Tear.
The singer did at least thank the crowd for their time and patience when wrapping up his mod promo, insisting that he'll be doing it every night until he reaches a million downloads. As of right now, the mod has just over 2,300 unique downloads since it went on Nexus Mods on September 1st. Notably, it's also tagged "AI-assisted", that being the label the site uses for works which have "developer-led code, content, or mod assets, with limited AI involvement" and/or have used AI for texture upscaling, audio upscaling/cleaning, and concept art that's not in the final build.
If you fancy giving it a go in spite of that, you'll need a copy of Fallout 4 updated to the latest version, and the corresponding versions of the game's script extender and Address Library for F4SE Plugins.
