Hideo Kojima posed for photos outside Sony City this week – about a month after PlayStation dramatically axed his upcoming espionage action game, Physint.
In one of the most dramatic turnarounds in gaming industry history, Xbox swooped in to save Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor, leaving fans agitated at Sony’s more recent decisions.
Subsequent reporting has revealed the Japanese giant was not happy with the terms of the agreement, which would see it foot the bill for an IP it would never own.
There had been speculation Kojima wanted as much as $400 million to make the game, although journalists claim Microsoft is paying a lot less to fund the project, so who knows where that number came from.
It’s not entirely clear why Kojima visited Sony City this week, but he told IGN he “loves” the company and that there’s no “bad feelings” between him and the firm, despite its decision to pull the plug on Physint.
Awkwardly, Kojima Productions’ main Tokyo office is a stone’s throw away from Sony HQ, so perhaps he was dropping in for a cup of coffee and a croissant.
Either way, I think it’s a relief to know no bridges have been burned here. Physint may no longer be a PlayStation production, but I think any Sony product is richer knowing it’s got Kojima’s support.
