HoYoverse is undoubtedly gunning for the Animal Crossing audience with its next title Petit Planet, so it’s perhaps no surprise to see the Chinese dev focus on Switch 2 with its upcoming cosy title.
However, it’s noteworthy as the juggernaut Chinese dev has brought practically all of its releases to Sony’s system since Genshin Impact – the ginormous open world RPG which launched during the peak of the pandemic in 2020.
It’s worth noting that HoYoverse had intended to bring Genshin Impact to the original Switch years ago, but this port famously never materialised.
Petit Planet will launch on 4th December for PC and mobile, but during a Special Programme earlier today, the dev committed to a Switch 2 release in 2027. It didn’t mention any other consoles, like the PS5.
Given that HoYoverse already has a massive PlayStation fanbase, its social media accounts are already being targeted with queries about a PS5 version. I wouldn’t be surprised if it does end up on Sony’s console eventually.
I do think Switch 2 makes sense for this particular title, as it’s clear the dev is trying to peel players away from Animal Crossing. I also can see how the cosy game format works best on mobile formats.
But considering Tom Nook and co will likely return on Nintendo’s console at some point in the future, I do wonder whether there might be an opportunity bringing this game to the PS5, where the only other competitor I can think of is Disney Dreamlight Valley and maybe Infinity Nikki.
I’ll ask HoYoverse whether it has any plans to release Petit Planet on other platforms in the future.
