Floor796 is a gigantic animated pixel-art scene filled with references to games, movies, TV shows, anime, memes, and internet culture, all squeezed together in a fictional space station.
Rather than controlling a character, you simply drag and zoom your way around the station, inspecting everything from laboratories and shops to a swimming pool and nightclub. Almost everywhere you look, there’s another familiar face or reference worked into the background.
Characters from The Simpsons, Star Trek, Invincible, Fallout, Ghostbusters, Pulp Fiction, and Game of Thrones are among those hiding around the station, alongside hundreds of other references including internet memes. Clicking a character reveals what they’re based on, letting you check whether you correctly recognized them.
Despite its enormous scale, Floor796 is essentially a one-person hobby project that has been growing since 2018. According to the site’s FAQ, its creator spent roughly the first year developing a custom animation editor, rendering engine, and website before properly getting to work on the scene itself.
Building it has been an equally lengthy process. A new block initially took more than eight months to produce, although improvements to the tools have since cut that down to around one to one-and-a-half months.
