This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise, one of Nintendo’s most beloved and enduring IPs of all time. Since it’s been around for so long, the Zelda franchise has gotten plenty of anniversary-version accessories and consoles, mostly handheld ones like the Game Boy Advance SP and 3DS. However, for the 40th anniversary of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf’s time-defying battle, Nintendo is getting a little more ambitious with its Zelda-branded offerings.
As announced in today’s Zelda Anniversary Nintendo Direct, Nintendo will be releasing the official Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Switch 2 console. This will be the first Zelda-branded main Nintendo console release since the Wind Waker Wii U, though it’ll look a lot nicer than that one. Not only are we getting a new Switch 2 version, but we’re also getting a small variety of additional Zelda-branded accessories, including a dock, Joy-Con 2s, a Pro Controller 2, and a carrying case.
If you don’t already have a Switch 2, this is probably going to be the nicest-looking version of the console we’ll be getting for the foreseeable future, and something nifty to look forward to ahead of the launch of the Ocarina of Time remake.
The Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 echoes the series' beautiful art style, featuring gold holographic Triforce symbols all across the back of the console proper. The included dock also has these gold Triforce symbols dotted across the front, plus a larger, more ornate Triforce front and center with the symbols of the three goddesses emblazoned on each section.
The 40th Anniversary Joy-Con 2s, also included in the bundle, are colored a lovely shade of earthy green with gold outlines beneath the analog sticks. Both Joy-Con 2s have light black, transparent Triforce patterns, and the left Joy-Con 2 in particular also has a pixelated logo of Link holding up a gold Triforce. The right Joy-Con 2 has a pixelated Zelda hidden on the back.
In addition to the console, dock, and Joy-Con 2s, Nintendo is also releasing several Zelda Anniversary accessories. First on the docket is a new Pro Controller 2, colored in its usual shade of black mixed with that same earthy green, and punctuated by black and gold Triforce patterns and an ornate Triforce in the center. This controller can be optionally purchased alongside a display stand with an image of Hyrule on it, though this stand will be sold exclusively at Nintendo Store, Nintendo New York, and Nintendo San Francisco.
