September is finally here. The month the games industry has been talking about in hushed tones, as it feels like every single new game we’ve been waiting for will be released over the next 30 days. That feeling has been compounded hours into the new month, as review scores for the first three big September releases have all dropped at the same time.
By the end of this week, three of September’s biggest games will already be here. Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Orbitals, and The Blood of Dawnwalker. Reviews for all three of those games are now in, and it’s Onimusha currently leading the September pack.
Way of the Sword has an 86 on OpenCritic and an 85 on Metacritic. Not only does that mean it is currently September’s highest-rated game, but it’s tied for the highest-rated game in series history with Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, which also scored 85 on MC. Here at TheGamer, Josh Robertson awarded Way of the Sword a 4.5/5, writing, “If you’re an Onimusha fan praying that this new game will finally revive the series, you should be very excited about the future.”
Before we get our first new Onimusha game since 2006 on September 4, there’s a double whammy to look forward to on September 3. The Blood of Dawnwalker, a vampire-themed action-RPG from the director of The Witcher 3, drops that day, and although its review scores don’t quite measure up to Way of the Sword’s, it was pretty close.
An 85 on OpenCritic for Blood of Dawnwalker, and a slightly lower 83 on Metacritic. That lines up nicely with the 4/5 we gave it here at TheGamer. “For a game I wasn’t entirely sure about at first, I’m happy to be walking away with a new addition to my lineup of favorite RPGs, and one that I’d love to see influence the genre,” Kaitlyn Peterson’s review reads.
Releasing that same day is a co-op game I’ve been very excited for since I had the chance to preview it earlier this year - Orbitals. A Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, and even though its review scores haven’t quite lived up to the lofty expectations I had after taking it for a spin a few months ago, it still sounds like it’s going to be everything those looking forward to it are expecting.
Orbitals has the lowest review scores of September’s first three big releases with an 83 on OpenCritic and an 81 on Metacritic. Again, though, don’t let that taint your expectations. Kaitlyn reviewed Orbitals for us here at TheGamer, too (she’s had an incredibly busy couple of weeks), awarding the anime co-op space adventure a 4/5, heaping praise on its stunning visuals and banger soundtrack.
A reminder before you go that today is September 1. The month is only a few hours old, and we already have review scores for three big games in the books. With the likes of Marvel’s Wolverine, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, and Silent Hill: Townfall still to come, I’d be surprised to see Onimusha still clinging to that top spot by September 30.
