Steam has been on an excellent run when it comes to free gaming offerings this summer, with September already having more than a few exciting titles you can snag entirely for free. While you won't get to keep Steam's latest offering after the free-to-play window is up, the 48 hours left to play over the weekend offer plenty of time to see whether the full game is for you or not.
Even though it might not have the best review score on Steam currently, the recent free weekend combined with a major content update offer plenty of incentives to at least give this infamous co-op RPG a shot, whether you're playing by yourself or alongside a few friends.
Offering the most recent entry in the long-running series for Steam's latest free weekend, Gearbox's Borderlands 4 is available to download and play without spending a dime until the 14th of September, at 6:00 PM UTC.
Although it's unlikely that you'll be able to complete a full playthrough of Borderlands 4 within this time, given its roughly 30–50 hour length according to HowLongToBeat, you'll still be able to make a significant dent in a run over the weekend while trying out several of its unique offerings.
Borderlands 4 has a lengthy shader compilation process, so it's recommended to run at least once before you're ready to play.
Even with Borderlands 4's mixed reviews compared to its predecessors, the classic looter shooter gameplay loop and distinct visual identity of the series are still tough to beat, especially at a $0 price tag.
On top of the free trial, Borderlands 4 just got some major content additions in the form of the well-recieved Lovelss the Hacker character DLC, allowing you to play as a new Vault Hunter with a cyborg companion in the form of a large snake-like creature. Borderlands 4 also just got a new story DLC adding new bosses, missions, maps, and weapons, although it hasn't been reviewed as favorably by comparison.
