Xbox started rolling out its disc-to-digital initiative earlier this year. Until now, the feature has only been available to Insiders. Now it’s available for everyone, which means you can start backing up your collection of physical Xbox games by claiming their digital licenses.
Xbox confirmed on Twitter that disc-to-digital is now available to everybody. “Now, all players can experience the benefits of digital with most Xbox Series X and Xbox One physical discs,” the post reads, coupled with a short clip of a disc flying into, and then back out of, a Series X.
It really is that simple. To claim a digital copy of a physical game you own, all you need to do is insert the disc into an Xbox console while signed in to your profile and claim its license. That required a couple of button presses at first, but some Insiders have claimed this week that the process is now even simpler, with the digital copy being claimed automatically when a disc is inserted.
It doesn’t need to be an Xbox Series console to claim the digital version of a physical Xbox Series game either. Digital licenses for current-gen versions of physical games can be claimed by inserting their discs into an Xbox One. Only Xbox One and Series games are compatible, as Xbox 360 and original Xbox games aren’t a part of the initiative.
Note that Xbox states disc-to-digital works with “most” games released during its last two generations. It still hasn’t released a definitive list of which games are compatible, although at this stage we know that the list of games that aren’t would be a lot shorter.
We know that because, from the second disc-to-digital went live for Insiders, the Xbox community has been working together to figure out which games work with the new feature and which ones don’t. Just this week, users discovered that Sega has started to make some of its games compatible with disc-to-digital after it was one of a handful of major studios that appeared to have opted out of the program.
The website where you can check if a game is disc–to-digital compatible or not is XCT.live. So far, the community has checked 1,860 games, confirming that 1,578 work with disc-to-digital. Only a handful of games remain unconfirmed, and now that the feature is available to everyone, those remaining games will almost certainly be tested in the coming days.
When the full rollout was announced, XCT’s unconfirmed figure was 46. That has already dropped to 37, demonstrating that those who have just been granted access are already contributing, plugging gaps that weren’t able to be plugged when only Insiders had access to the feature.
