What if you could play through big, vast digital areas using a Hot Wheels car? That’s basically the concept behind Hot Wheels Infinite Rush, the latest game that takes the miniature model car brand to the virtual world through the hands of Italian developer and publisher Milestone.
In Hot Wheels Infinite Rush, players have the chance to explore four islands, each of which is huge and filled with many activities to do. It’s possible to just explore it sandbox-style and bring havoc to each area and that’s already a lot of fun, with the destruction and skillful maneuvers also counting as points, but progress depends on doing the big challenges.
At first, only the Wheelswood area is available, and unlocking more options is only possible if the player completes the basic races. Each place has some variety to it and plays with some concepts that are reminiscent of real-life lines, like having a giant scorpion, an octopus, and a snake that opens and closes its mouth.
Exploring these "open worlds" feels interesting, with many unique landmarks and regions on each island. For instance, Wheelswood has a giant gorilla in the middle of town throwing objects downward, a long beach area and a big sign with the name of the region. Meanwhile, Drifty Temples has a major Oriental atmosphere with traditional-looking buildings and a giant dragon road.
It’s often interesting to see how the roads connecting areas from above are just as colorful as the ones that often come in real-life Hot Wheels packs. Even small details of the town, like trees and lamp posts, are actually plastic, toy-like in the texture and modeling. The little details get together to make the whole experience feel like playing with four gigantic Hot Wheels kits.
When it comes to the single-player challenges, there are two race formats and a few alternative mini-games that still use the racing format. Besides the traditional race, there is the Elimination mode, which cuts down the lowest ranked racers at regular intervals. This forces the player to be on top of their game, avoiding the worst positions among the racers.
The other challenges will force players to drive alone and focus on other specific goals. In Time Attack, the player has to finish a lap with a specific time to beat; meanwhile, Smashing Wheels has the player trying to get wheels spread along the track to amass enough points. Other examples include Drift Master, which is all about making wild curves before reaching “checkpoints” on the racing tracks, and Waypoint, which is focused on exploring the map going from one point to the next in a sequence that can be better handled by knowing the track.
By completing certain challenges, it’s possible to unlock new cars, with others available to buy from the dealership. There are also Daredevils around who can be defeated in a 1v1 race. Besides all those competitions, however, there are other unique systems to make use of, like the Photo Mode, which has a few special uses. Stickers can be found on walls and obtained through it, and there are unique missions tied to taking photos of landmarks using different cars.
