Upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game Danganronpa 2×2 is changing its physical release from a traditional cartridge to a Game-Key Card and refunding physical purchases. Danganronpa 2×2 publisher Spike Chunsoft revealed the news and explained that the choice to switch wasn't made lightly.
Prior to its release, Nintendo revealed that the Switch 2 would use two separate kinds of cartridges to play games: standard game cartridges, and Game-Key Cards. Game cartridges have the files necessary to play the game onboard, but Game-Key Cards are essentially a download code in a physical form. Game-Key Cards tell the Switch 2 what game to download and need to be inserted in order to play. So far, some games have been released on standard cartridges for the Switch 2, while others have opted for Game-Key Cards.
On social media, publisher Spike Chunsoft revealed that a change had been made regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 release of Danganronpa 2×2. Previously, physical copies of the game were going to use standard game cartridges on the Nintendo Switch 2. However, the company has now changed its plan, and Switch 2 physical copies will be shipped with a Game-Key Card in all regions the game is sold in. Spike Chunsoft didn't explain why the change was being made, simply stating that it was "unavoidable." As a result of this shift, all Shopify US Store orders of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game have been canceled outright.
Gamers in the US who are still interested in playing Danganronpa 2×2 are encouraged to place new orders through the Shopify US store once their refunds are processed. Those who ordered the game through the Shopify UK or EU stores, and any other retail stores, will simply receive their copies with the Game-Key Cards instead. Spike Chunsoft notes that anyone who didn't order from the Shopify US store and wants to change their pre-orders will need to contact the retailer they placed them with.
While some gamers are indifferent to the shift, many have voiced objections to this change. Several have said that they won't be placing a new order for the game when they're refunded, while some others who have purchased from different retailers have promised to cancel. At this time, no announcements regarding changes to the PlayStation physical release have been declared.
While the motivation for the change from Spike Chunsoft isn't clear, it lands at a particularly tumultuous time for gamers as the overall industry shifts its approach towards an all-digital landscape. Many in the community are more concerned than ever that digital copies of games and Game-Key Cards are merely licenses to play, not full ownership, and have expressed concerns about the future when download and authorization servers could potentially go down, or about the possibilities of purchases being revoked. These concerns haven't been unfounded, with Sony expected to delete hundreds of movies from the PlayStation Store later this year. Those who paid for any of those movies will lose access to them with no refunds.
