Resident Evil Requiem actor Nick Apostolides has shared thoughts about Zach Cregger's new movie based on the franchise. Apostolides provided the voice and motion capture for Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil Requiem, following previous roles in the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4. Other actors have played the role over the years, but Apostolides has now been associated with the character for the last seven years.
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot takes a different approach than previous movies. The Paul W.S. Anderson films used characters and enemies that originated in the games (including Leon), but focused primarily on an original character named Alice. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was a mostly faithful adaptation of the first two games in the series, which meant Leon also played a role in that 2021 reboot.
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot is now in theaters, and Nick Apostolides talked about the movie on GameRant's Pause for Thought. Apostolides has not yet seen the movie, but the Leon actor shared some thoughts about the director's overall approach to the source material. Specifically, Apostolides touched on some of the reactions from fans that were disappointed by the changes shown in the Resident Evil trailers. Fans took issue with the trailers showing snow in Raccoon City, as well as the main character Bryan's use of a smartphone. Both these elements clash with Resident Evil 2, which was set in the late '90s and had no snow in the game's locations.
The movie doesn't strictly follow the events in Resident Evil 2, but Apostolides seems unbothered by the changes. Instead, the actor praised Cregger's decision to make the audience feel like they're playing a video game. It's a very different approach from the previous Resident Evil movies, and to video game adaptations in general.
"I think what he's trying to do is, as an audience watching this movie, he wants you to feel like you're a gamer in the seat playing a game, controlling this character. I think it's a brilliant mechanism as like a vehicle for this movie, and I think it's going to be unlike anything we've ever seen in a video game movie."
Apostolides' positive thoughts on Resident Evil could sway some fans that are unsure about Cregger's approach to the movie. Resident Evil has existed for three decades now, and the series has built a passionate audience in that time. It's unsurprising that fans might worry about changes to the source material, especially given the mixed reactions to previous adaptations. So far, critic and audience reviews for Cregger's Resident Evil have been much more positive. While the director has not signed on to make another movie, Cregger has suggested he might do more Resident Evil in the future.
As for Apostolides, it remains to be seen when he might show up next as Leon S. Kennedy. Story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem is in development, but Capcom has not indicated when it will come out. Requiem's DLC is rumored to arrive after Resident Evil: Veronica, which is set to be released in 2027. Leon did not play a role in the original version of Resident Evil — Code: Veronica, but Capcom has made changes to its remakes, so it's possible the character could also appear in that game, in some capacity.
