Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen began its official run under Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump on March 5, 2018, in the 14th Issue of the magazine. Right from the very beginning, the author made it quite clear that the story was focused on sorcerers. In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, the primary power system stemmed from Cursed Energy. Those in Japan were known to hold especially high amounts of Cursed Energy due to negative emotions. When this Cursed Energy seeped out, it led to the creation of Cursed Spirits, responsible for various tragedies affecting Japanese society. To combat these cursed spirits, there existed powerful sorcerers, those who could control their Cursed Energy and make use of it through various Jujutsu arts. Cursed Energy and Jujutsu sorcery made for an incredibly exciting cast of characters who delivered to us some of the most memorable characters, such as Gojo Satoru, Yuji Itadori, and many others.
Fans now have to bid farewell to the sorcerers forever. In the latest release of Jujutsu Kaisen, that is Modulo Volume 3, it has now been officially confirmed that sorcerers in Japan are not going to exist any longer. With Yuji Itadori's decision to remove Cursed Energy from future generations, this current generation is going to be the last of Jujutsu sorcerers, and after that, their era will officially come to a close.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo by Gege Akutami was planned as a spinoff of the original series, set 68 years after the conclusion of the Sukuna raid. As such, the main characters of Modulo were completely different. Instead of Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki, and Megumi Fushiguro, the focus was on Yuka Okkotsu, as well as her brother Tsurugi Okkotsu. Alongside Yuka and Tsurugi, there was Maru, who was also treated as an incredibly important character alongside his brother Cross, and Dabura Karaba. These characters drove the narrative forward in incredibly exciting ways, making Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo a phenomenal story.
With the final release of Modulo in May 2026, Gege Akutami changed sorcerers in Japan forever. In this final volume, Yuji Itadori, the former protagonist of the series, decided to seek help from Maru and remove Cursed Energy from Japanese sorcerers forever. For years, many in Japan, such as Yuki Tsukumo, had tried to eliminate the existence of Cursed Spirits forever. Finally, Yuji was able to see this dream come to fruition thanks to help from Maru. By utilizing Idle Transfiguration on an incredibly large scale using the Cursed Energy stored by Yuta Okkotsu in his ring, Cursed Energy was removed from all future generations of Japan.

Yuji Itadori himself considered this act to be a sin, given that Cursed Energy is naturally occurring, but he believed it to be the right step moving forward and confirmed that he would bear all the responsibilities for this major sin. In doing so, Yuji made Japan a much safer place, but at the same time, he crippled the sorcerers of planet Earth. In other words, the sorcerers are no longer going to exist from here on in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, which Gege Akutami is seemingly looking to expand upon even further.
At the end of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, Gege Akutami removed Cursed Energy from the humans of Japan, as well as the Rumelians, both of whom are currently living together in synergy. However, those who already have access to these powers will continue to maintain them. Once they die, the descendants will not have access to Cursed Energy any longer. To be clear, Gege confirmed that Cursed Energy cannot be fully erased.
Tiny traces of Cursed Energy can be found in all people all across the world, even outside of Japan, which means that the creation of Cursed Spirits can never be fully stopped. However, due to the removal of the excessively high amounts of Cursed Energy in Japanese society, as well as those from Rumel, the creation of cursed spirits has now been greatly limited.
