Whenever you watch a video game trailer or see a commercial for one, which feels exceedingly rare these days, chances are you're going to see some kind of rating for it. It determines who the game is appropriate for, functioning to show both if the game is alright for kids of a certain age to play and what kind of content it might have.
It wasn't always this way, of course, as the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, the ESRB for short, didn't exist in its official capacity until 1994. Prior to 1994, it was an absolute free for all, a Wild West where games just came out and had zero concern about who the game was being played by.
As the 1990s continued, however, parents saw their concerns reach the halls of the United States government, where multiple hearings were held, with officials calling out games like Mortal Kombat and Doom. They argued that video games needed to be regulated by some sort of rating system akin to the way movies were. They were ultimately successful, and these gory, rebellious games were at the heart of their arguments.

Techno Cop first hit the Amiga, Atari ST and MS-DOS back in 1988, and was an impressive game for its time. The animation of characters exploding into violent chunks was remarkable, but the Sega Genesis version from 1990 was even more brutal.
Animations of enemies bursting into a bloody mess were improved, and more blood was added to each body. I played Techno Cop well after the controversy surrounding it had faded, but it was quite shocking to see even back in the early 2000s.
