Star Wars lore has grown infinitely more complex and interesting over the decades since 1977, and that is especially true of how it depicts the Force. After countless movies, TV series, books, games, and more (and that's only including what's still canon), the Force has gone far beyond its traditional portrayal as a binary scale of good and evil, with the Jedi at one end and the Sith on the other. These days, the Star Wars saga is full of Force users who are neither Jedi nor Sith.
What's more, many of these unaffiliated Force users are among the most powerful Force-sensitive beings of any kind anywhere in the Star Wars galaxy, as the following 10 characters make plain. To count as a non-Jedi or non-Sith Force user, a character cannot have been trained by a master of either of these orders (thus excluding Kylo Ren, Grogu, and Asajj Ventress) and cannot have once been a Padawan or Apprentice themselves at any point (like Ahsoka Tano or Maul). Out of those who fit within these criteria, these are the strongest Force-sensitives who aren't Jedi or Sith.
Maz Kanata is easily one of the Sequel Trilogy's biggest question marks because the films reveal so little about who she is, despite promising to spill the answers eventually (Maz never did tell Rey how she got a hold of Luke's lightsaber). One thing that does seem pretty clear about Kanata is that she is somewhat Force-sensitive, and although she clearly has never had any formal Jedi or combat training, her intuitive Force skills are impressive.
Though Maz is never explicitly stated to be Force-sensitive on screen, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary confirms that this is the case.
Memorably, Maz was immediately able to tell that Han Solo had entered her establishment, simply by sensing his presence. On a deeper level, she can sense someone's good intentions and whether they are trustworthy, which has no doubt helped her career in the criminal underworld. Most impressively, though, Maz is even able to sense changes of fortune in the galaxy, indicating a deep connection to the Force.
Even more so than Maz, Finn is another Sequel Trilogy character whose Force-sensitivity was never made explicit on screen, but there is just too much evidence pointing toward it for it not to be the case. In The Force Awakens, Finn proves to be extremely talented with a lightsaber, despite having no previous training, and he even seems able to hear the Hosnian Prime people's death-cries when Starkiller Base murders them. Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi experienced something similar with Alderaan in A New Hope.
Star Wars fans also speculate that it was Finn's Force-sensitivity that caused him to break free from his Stormtrooper conditioning in the first place. What's unclear with Finn, however, is whether he even knows he has a connection to the Force or not. The Rise of Skywalker almost confirmed this, as some unused takes saw Finn confess the truth to Rey, but these didn't make it into the finished movie. Let's hope Finn did tell her later and finally got himself some formal training after Episode IX.
Chirrut Îmwe was one of the best additions to Rogue One, as he felt like a homage to the kind of classic martial arts movie characters who inspired George Lucas to create the Jedi in the first place. And yet Îmwe isn't technically a Jedi himself. While loyal to the Jedi cause and teachings, he was one of the Guardians of the Whills, the protectors of the Kyber Temple on Jedha, which is the ancestral home of the Jedi.
