An update on the website of UK second-hand retail chain CeX has confirmed previous reports that it’s opening a store dedicated entirely to retro and import games.
Earlier this month retro YouTuber Retro Ghetto reported that the company is set to open two new CeX stores which will solely focus on retro, as opposed to other CeX stores where retro is just one section along with modern games, mobile phones, computers, laptops, DVDs and Blu-rays.
The report claimed that the first of these stores was set to be opened in Birmingham, in an empty shop next to the existing CeX in Bull Street. This shop was previously a second-hand shop for children’s goods called KidX, but according to Retro Ghetto it was now set to become the first ‘ReX’ store.
Although CeX has yet to officially announce that it will indeed be opening a retro store, an update on the CeX website has now essentially confirmed the previous report.
The Find a CeX Store section on the website now lists a ‘Retro Birmingham’ store in its Midlands section, with the same address as the existing Birmingham store (which still has its own listing) and a Google Map with a pin placed very slightly north of it (suggesting the adjacent building).
At the moment the page is just a shell, listing the address and simply saying “opening hours coming soon”, but it makes it seem more likely that Retro Ghetto’s source was correct in saying the store was expected to open by “either holiday this year or early 2027”.
What has yet to be determined is the location of the second retro store mentioned in the initial report. The YouTuber’s source said that two stores were planned, but only the Birmingham store’s location was confirmed and there are no other retro stores listed on the CeX website yet, suggesting the focus is on opening the Birmingham branch first.
According to the initial report, these new stores – which are currently being codenamed ‘ReX’ (for Retro Exchange) or ‘CeX Retro’ – will sell games from all regions, rather than just PAL regions, meaning games and hardware that could never previously be sold in CeX (including North American and Japanese imports) will be on sale.
