Xbox Officially Makes 5 Open-World Games 100% Free Until October 4

From now through October 4, Xbox users will be able to download 5 free games and play them as much as they want with no price tag attached. This limited-time promotion is one that Xbox fans have become very familiar with, as it falls under the Free Play Days campaign. This time around, there isn’t a mixture of Free For All offerings and Game Pass-only titles, as all players will be able to access the latest batch of games even if they don’t currently have an Xbox Game Pass subscription.

The Free Play Days promotion that has become a fixture of the Xbox brand goes live every Thursday, with the game count ranging from a single title to four or more. The previous week’s games—The Escapists 2, PGA Tour 2K25, Young Suns, and The Division 2—offered a healthy mixture of genres, but this week's line-up is a little different. From now until October 4, gamers will be able to experience five huge open-world games, with huge discounts available for those who decide they want to own one or more of these titles permanently. Come October 4, players will lose access to these games, so deciding which lengthy game to binge will be essential.

The most recent entry in the Far Cry franchise at the time of writing, Far Cry 6 offers exactly what users have come to expect from the IP: a memorable villain played by Breaking Bad actor Giancarlo Esposito, a gorgeous open-world to cause chaos in, and makeshift weaponry to fight back with. Players take control of revolutionary Dani Rojas and can choose whether the protagonist is male or female, and from there, they’ll lead a revolution to free Yara from the dictator Anton Castillo’s rule. A unique backpack tool, various animal companions, and the use of a third-person perspective for key moments set this Far Cry game apart from its peers.

Arguably the most beloved game from Assassin’s Creed’s open-world RPG era takes players to Ancient Greece, and though it feels less focused on typical elements of the Brotherhood than other entries because of this far-back setting, this has the benefit of making it a title that series newcomers can easily enjoy. Like Far Cry 6, players choose between a male or female protagonist (Alexios or the fan favorite, Wonder Woman-like Kassandra), with a key goal in the story being to reunite with whichever family member isn’t chosen as the player character. The game features a modern-day segment, mythology, dialogue choices, character leveling, and a gigantic world full of naval combat and islands to sail to and from.

The first of Massive’s two attempts at non-Division open-world games (the second being Star Wars Outlaws), this first-person video game utilized the official lore bible for James Cameron’s record-breaking Avatar film franchise, delivering an approved narrative officially recognized as canon to the series. Said story places gamers in control of a Na’vi raised by the RDA who must reclaim their lost heritage and free their people from the villainous humans. The beautiful western frontier of the planet Pandora will be fully explorable, with a mixture of Na’vi and human weaponry available for combat. A flying mount is available, too, as is the option to switch between first and third-person due to post-launch updates for Frontiers of Pandora.

While Skull and Bones was a bit of a punching bag due to its delays, reworkings, and disappointing showings at various conferences, it may be worth checking out with no price tag attached. Players take control of a shipwrecked outcast and work for infamous pirates before eventually becoming icons themselves, starting from nothing and building themselves up to be feared. Online worlds support up to 20 players, with players able to team up in crews of 3 to enjoy the game’s immersive sailing and combat. Players will utilize ships with different weapons, manage winds carefully in and out of fights, and rank up to unlock tougher contracts and gear. Skull and Bones is also the little engine that could, as despite the early backlash to the game, it’s entering a third year of support, with automated fleet management, sea monsters, and more having come to the open-world pirate game.
