The Crown of Roots is a wearable headpiece in Valheim that players can buy from the Bog Witch, a friendly NPC found in Swamp biomes who sells a variety of cooking and potion-making ingredients. However, before the Bog Witch starts selling the Crown of Roots, you'll first need to defeat a Writhan, a freaky-looking bog creature that can also be found in swamps. There's a bit more to this than just monster hunting and shopping, though, so if you want this headpiece in Valheim, you'll need to know the intricacies behind it.
As of writing, Writhans only spawn in Swamps that are at least 5000 meters away from the center of the map. Since you always start a fresh save file close to their map's center point, you'll have to find a Swamp biome that's several islands away from the initial spawn zone.
Unfortunately, there's no way to measure the distance between two points in Valheim without manually counting one-meter-long building tiles, so you'll just have to get a feel for things. However, if you've already made it to the Deep North or Ashlands biomes, then looking for a swamp near those regions is probably the safest thing you can bet on.
Once you're sure you're far away enough from your world's center point, comb the nearest swamp and look for a monster releasing a foul, yellow gas. Those are Writhans, and they spawn fairly rarely. These monsters aren't terribly hard to beat, but their attacks are poisonous, so you'll always end up taking some damage even if you block incoming hits.
Writhans are weak to Slash damage, so swords and axes will do more damage to them than spears or arrows. Meanwhile, they're resistant to Fire and Blunt, and neutral to everything else. When a Writhan's health reaches zero, it'll explode after a short delay.
Once you take a Writhan down, the Bog Witch will start selling the Crown of Roots for 3000 gold coins, which is a lot of money. Before you buy it, you'll want to know that the Crown of Roots is purely a cosmetic item. Just think of it as a fancy hat — all it provides is a single point of armor, and every upgrade it receives increases its total armor value by two per level.
Unless you really like how the Crown of Roots looks, you're better off saving your money for practical purchases like ingredients for Feasts or other similar crafting materials. If you really want to buy the Crown of Roots but don't have enough money, hunt some Trolls and raid Troll Caves, or pick a fight with Fulings in the Plains. These enemies drop decent amounts of gold coins when slain, and their homes/camps typically contain more coins or other valuables that you can sell to other merchants.
