Even in a down year for the Madden NFL and EA Sports College Football franchises, it's still clear that these games, along with EA FC, are the crown jewels of the EA Sports portfolio.
They have the pomp, the circumstance, and the polish you'd expect. Well, maybe not the polish, but you get the idea. Even with all their flaws (trust me, both Madden and College Football have flaws), there's no denying that the on-field action is as fun as ever.
The same cannot be said for NHL 27, a game that is unsure what it wants to be. Is it a true simulation experience? Is it looking to be more of a presentation-first arcade sports title? NHL 27 is often conflicted about which direction to steer itself, and the result is yet another sad entry in EA Sports' hockey franchise.
I understand that the NHL isn't anywhere as popular as the other sports I've mentioned. I'm also fully aware that it's nowhere near as popular as, say, baseball or basketball in the United States. That's no excuse, though. NHL 27 often feels like it's fighting for scraps after the big boys get to eat a succulent meal, and it's a damn shame.
One of the new back-of-the-box features for NHL 27 is all about its presentation. New intro sequences akin to what we saw with Madden this year. Improved replay and dynamic animations akin to what you'd see in a television broadcast. Real reactions from players and the coaching staff. There's also the introduction of ESPN's John Buccigross and Darren Pang on commentary. The goal here is to prevent the repetitive nature of past entries.
NHL 27 didn't get the memo, apparently, because its presentation is beyond repetitive. If I have to see the same animation and Pang touting the importance of an inconsequential moment in the game, while Buccigross incorrectly assesses the current state of the game, I'm going to lose my mind. As a Chicago Blackhawks fan, I'd rather dive back into the pre-draft discourse that Chicago was 100% totally going to trade for Matthew Knies (spoiler alert: it was never happening, even if Toronto didn't win the Gavin McKenna lottery sweepstakes). Look, I'd love it if Bedard would get some help from someone other than a 37-year-old Patrick Kane, but I'm also a realist.
