Super Saiyan from Dragon Ball Z may not be the first anime transformation, but it's by far the most iconic, important, and influential. Without Super Saiyan, the anime landscape – especially the shonen genre – would look completely different if Goku never awakened a new form while fighting Frieza on Namek.
While Dragon Ball has introduced many powerful forms since, Super Saiyan remains an essential part of the series' iconography. Even in a world with God Ki, Super Saiyan is an important Dragon Ball fixture, which the characters still use constantly. The strongest Super Saiyans are able to punch far above their weight, taking on Dragon Ball's greatest warriors even while fighting at a disadvantage these days.
As far as Dragon Ball Super is concerned, Super Saiyans are old news and no duo proves that better than Goten and Trunks. The pair of Hybrid Saiyans couldn't even turn Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, a mistake Toyotarou fortunately corrected in the manga's take on the Super Hero Saga. Even then, though, Goten and Trunks are pitifully weak in Dragon Ball Super.
At most, Super Saiyan Goten and Trunks can assist Gamma 1 and 2 in their assault on Cell Max, dealing some minor damage and briefly stunning him. In a multiverse with God Ki, personal forms, and the strongest warriors alive constantly breaking their limits, there's just no room for young fighters like Goten or Trunks who haven't even bothered unlocking Grade forms for SSJ.
By unlocking his Ultimate form at the end of Dragon Ball Z, Gohan no longer needed to turn Super Saiyan in order to use his full power. Unfortunately, he starts slacking off after the Majin Buu Saga and, by Resurrection F, can barely turn Super Saiyan. History has since repeated itself and Gohan is once again the strongest Z-Fighter after unlocking Beast at the end of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but long gone are the days of him being the strongest Super Saiyan.
Super Saiyan Gohan is still powerful, as evidenced by his fighting performance in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but it's clear he's not capable of keeping up in the big leagues anymore – at least not without Ultimate. Unless he's using Beast, Gohan has fallen far behind Goku and Vegeta now that they not only have God Ki, but their own personal Ultra forms.
It's been a long time since Vegeta treated Super Saiyan 1 as anything other than an afterthought. Upon unlocking Super Saiyan 2 in Dragon Ball Z, he immediately makes SSJ2 his main form. Although Vegeta does occasionally use Super Saiyan to test his opponents in Dragon Ball Super, he generally prefers to get to the point and start fighting at close to full power sooner than Goku does.
