ARC Raiders dev says team ‘just couldn’t keep pace’ with players’ unquenchable bloodthirst for post-launch content

ARC Raiders’ massive launch nearly a year ago was a thing to behold as the extraction shooter ballooned in popularity in the following months.

But after the first few months of 2026, new playable content tapered, as did the game’s player count. In a recent interview, ARC Raiders executive producer Aleksander Grøndal said the “dedicated people” playing the game outpaced what the team could handle.

“We had some challenges around how much content there is in the game, how much progression there is in the game,” Grøndal said in the interview with GamesBeat. “We had some, but the players wanted more. We bet on trying to update it fast and giving players more things to do over time. That was our strategy, to try to meet those demands from players. The issue with that was the team just couldn’t keep pace with the players.

Grøndal said that “the players grew frustrated, because some of the things we shipped were perhaps not as good or as meaningful as they were hoping,” calling it “an awakening” for the devs at Embark Studios.

There was definitely a wall that was hit rather quickly by some hardcore ARC Raiders players, and that wall was hit in the months that followed earlier in the year. Back in May, Embark announced it would be stopping monthly patches in favor of larger, more substantial ones, the first being next month’s Frozen Trail update.

Grøndal said Frozen Trail is the game’s “largest update” and Embark will “bring in more ARCs, exciting ARCs, new weapons and gadgets and ways to move” as part of it, but he cited quality over quantity when it comes to post-launch updates, buoyed by the fact that Embark is a “small team” of “about 120 people.”

“I don’t think we can beat anyone on quantity,” he said about live-service content updates. “That’s going to be very hard for Embark to do. We’re very fast. But what we want to do is spend more time building quality stuff. Stuff that has the Embark finesse to it. That’s one reason why we changed the update cadence to make larger updates, rather than smaller, piecemeal updates. I believe that will yield higher quality.”

Patience is key for ARC Raiders, Grøndal said, especially when it came to the its sometimes-tumultuous development. But that patience is what gave birth to the game’s booming launch period, he said.
