What is happening across the Paradox Universe? So the publishers behind strategy stalwarts like Crusader Kings 3 and Europa Universalis 4 asked in a post to the socials the other day, which promised all will be revealed on August 25th at Gamescom. Unfortunately for those best laid plans, the name of the game in question looks to have leaked via Paradox's forum of all places. Assuming the leaks prove accurate, it's a post-apocalyptic survival strategiser called Afterworld.
That name was allegedly spotted by an eagle-eyed Reddit user who managed to spot some unreleased games in the filters for forum posts. Listed alongside the already announced Prison Architect 2 was an entry for a game called Afterworld, with the sub-heading "Afterworld - Dev Diary Drafts".
Another sleuth subsequently claimed to have unearthed a Discord server for the game, grabbing a synopsis for it before they were kicked out. "Lead a tribe of survivors, rediscover ancient technology, manage wasteland settlements and wage wars of conquest and political struggle in Afterworld, an original post-apocalyptic survival grand strategy game," read said blurb.
A wasteland setting heavy on tribals would seem to match the teaser Paradox are currently running on their website.
As much as I tend to prefer my post-apocalyptic adventures to revolve around a lone wanderer with some role-playing and first-person shooting to do, I'm intrigued by the idea of Paradox applying all of their strategy know-how to a war for the wastes. A Fallout-style world might be the one which immediately springs to mind, but the orange sand of the teaser could just as easily mesh with something more in the vein of Mad Max's barren Australian outback.
Rather than deciding whether you want to invade Russia or marry your favorite son off to a troublesome vassal's daughter, you're deciding whether your philosophy will follow in the footsteps of one which came before, or go in bold new directions to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
Then again, maybe there won't be much difference in deciding whether to invade a valley occupied by a rival gang of survivors or deciding whether to trade your favorite son for a month's supply of salvaged rations.
