After a few weeks of Insider testing, Xbox's new Disc-to-Digital feature is now available to all Xbox Series X and Xbox One owners. This new Disc-to-Digital feature allows users to insert a physical disc into their Xbox Series X or Xbox One and retrieve a digital license. This license then allows them to play the game digitally on their console, even when the disc is removed.
Announced on August 26, Xbox first rolled out its experimental Disc-to-Digital feature to Xbox Insiders on August 31. After a month of testing and gathering feedback, it seems Xbox is happy enough with the current version of the feature to push it to the masses.
As of September 30, everyone with an Xbox Series X and Xbox One that's downloaded the latest system update can make use of the Xbox Disc-to-Digital feature. Now, upon inserting a physical disc into an Xbox console, a digital license should be automatically unlocked, indicated by an on-screen notification. If that notification doesn't pop, players simply need to hover over the game icon on their Xbox home screen, press the start button on their controller, and select the 'Claim digital license' prompt.
From then on, users will be able to play that game without needing to insert the disc into the console. That said, if that same disc is ever inserted into a different Xbox Series X or Xbox One, the digital license will be removed from the prior console, and the original user will lose their ability to play it digitally. Users can check to see which licenses they still have access to via the console's settings in the ''Revoked Digital Games' section of the 'Games & Apps' area.
A few weeks ago, a controversy started brewing around Xbox's Disc-to-Digital feature, with some early testers claiming that certain publishers may have opted out of the program altogether. Ubisoft in particular came under a lot of fire in early September, with many of its most popular Far Cry and Assassin's Creed entries reportedly not being compatible with the Disc-to-Digital feature. Thankfully, this seemed to be a simple case of bad timing, as Ubisoft officially joined the Disc-to-Digital program just a few days later.
It's just been confirmed that SEGA has also joined the program, though Bandai Namco and Square Enix titles are still notably absent. While Microsoft has not released an official list of compatible Disc-to-Digital games, an unofficial list is available via XCT.live, where it's claimed that 1,583 Xbox One and Xbox Series X games are currently compatible with the program. Given that this program is still in its infancy, fans can probably expect more titles to join that list in the coming months.
