It’s back. LEGO has brought back LEGO Lord of the Rings Grond, a 307-piece set based on the wolf-shaped battering ram the Orcs use to shatter the Great Gate of Minas Tirith in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. It’s an awesome-looking set, and between now and September 30 it’s free – in a manner of speaking. There’s only one catch: to get it, you have to buy the $650 LEGO Minas Tirith set from the LEGO Store. I’m sorry.
Grond is what LEGO calls a Gift with Purchase” or “GWP.” These are smaller free sets LEGO gives you when you buy select sets from the official LEGO Store. GWPs are limited edition, and are not available to purchase separately. The problem is, they’re only available for a limited time, and LEGO often runs out of stock before that time is up. That’s exactly what happened in LEGO Grond’s initial run, when LEGO Minas Tirith originally released earlier this year.
Sometimes, however, LEGO brings them back. That’s the case with Grond. The Grond set is available once again, while supplies last, as a Minas Tirith GWP until September 30. As is fitting for any GWP accompanying the mammoth Minas Tirith set, Grond isn’t actually all that small. Valued at $29.99, it has you build a rolling support structure as well as the beastly, flame-throwing battering ram. It also includes two weapon-wielding Orc minifigures.
Minas Tirith, meanwhile, is a 8,278-piece behemoth, the largest LEGO Lord of the Rings set ever released. Kevin Wong, our go-to LEGO expert, built this gorgeous set and wrote about the experience, concluding, “It receives our highest recommendation.”
If you do buy the pricy Minas Tirith set, you’ll also get another GWP set in addition to Grond. That’s LEGO Scary Haunted Tree (which comes with all orders of $100 or more).
