If you're in the know regarding Frictional Games, you surely know about SOMA, the 2015 horror/sci-fi title that thrives on getting extra existential, thought-provoking, shocking, and horrifying all in its own specific ways. It's a very beloved game by those who have experienced it, and one that really sticks with you for years, perhaps even a decade at this point, after completing it.
Enter, ONTOS, the next game from Frictional. While it's not chronologically the game that follows SOMA in their development catalog, it is the one that's finally going back to this same sort of brainy sci-fi/horror vibe (after spending the last ten years with the Amnesia series, which is obviously also beloved). Frictional describes this game as the spiritual successor to SOMA, which will be excellent news for those that have been waiting for more mind-bending gameplay moments since 2015.
I got to go hands-on with ONTOS at gamescom 2026, and this demo session absolutely wound up being one of the titles that really stuck in my mind now over a week removed from the showcase. Here's why I'm looking forward to more ONTOS, while also being scared of it at the same time.
At a glance, and if you don't really know SOMA, you might think that ONTOS is hiding a more traditionally action-packed experience under the surface. Sure, the trailers and shown gameplay have focused on these weird situations and vibes over everything else, but at some point, we get a shotgun and start blasting some aliens on this creepy moon base, right? Actually, no.

In fact, when starting my play session, I noticed the Options menu didn't have a toggle to invert my camera controls on the Y-Axis (yes, I'm one of those people). When I asked the team about this, they apologized that this option wasn't in the test build, explained it obviously will be there in the real game, but also mentioned ONTOS isn't a twitchy game anyway, so hopefully it would still be okay for me.
For the sake of my brain trying to play a game with backwards camera controls (to me), I'm glad this was true. ONTOS isn't a game that's going to depend on split second reactions and pinpoint accuracy. That's not the vibe here. Instead, it's a game where you're going to explore a moon base, uncover shocking experiments, and make some difficult decisions along the way.
