Star Wars: Galactic Racer successfully blends the best of MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, WipEout HD, and Burnout 3: Takedown to make for one of the most exciting racers I’ve played in years.
This debut effort from Fuse Games – a UK studio founded by Criterion veterans – is a white-knuckle triumph which at times had me on the edge of my seat, cheering each narrow win and cursing every misjudged corner.
The dev is hesitant to describe the game’s unique campaign as a roguelite, but it absolutely scratches a similar itch to the likes of Hades or Saros.
Playing as a talented delivery driver named Shade, you’re dragged into a cosmic political plot involving the Galactic League’s star racer, Kestar Bool.
While the title’s narrative has a fairly straightforward rags-to-riches arc, this is Star Wars, and there’s just enough political intrigue to keep it interesting if you’re a fan of the franchise. If you don’t care, then the storytelling is light enough to fade into the background.
The game emphasises three different vehicle types: landspeeders, speeder bikes, and skim speeders. There is podracing as well, and I’ll discuss that in more detail later.
Each class – which can be customised with different parts and liveries – has a unique trait.
The speeder bikes, for example, are light and nimble and can boost out of corners like you’re playing Mario Kart. The skim speeders, meanwhile, can “knife” around bends at 90-degrees, maintaining speed.
