The Nintendo DS was a surprisingly good platform for delivering JRPGs, not to mention a pretty good choice for playing them. I know I have some great memories of enjoying lengthy JRPGs on long flights and road trips. Of course, one potential drawback (or perk, depending) of playing JRPGs on a handheld platform is that, when the plot suddenly derails because one of your party members did something, you risk making a fool of yourself by shouting in disbelief in public.
Obviously, any good story needs a few moments when things jump the proverbial rails. That’s what builds stakes, throws you off your expectations. Even if it’s not a bad thing, though, it can still be surprising, and not always in the way you wanted or hoped for. If nothing else, having your plot derailed by your companions doing something dumb does make great fodder for ranting on forums.
We’re using a bit of a loose definition of “companion” here, encompassing pretty much any characters that are supposed to be aiding your protagonist in the narrative, even if you don’t directly control them.
You remember those old PSAs where a kid gets confronted by an obviously sketchy, evil person and pressured to buy drugs or something? We all like to think we know an obviously bad person when we see one, but I guess if said bad person was a floating creature made of electromagnetic waves, that would muddle things slightly.
In Mega Man Star Force, in addition to his AM-ian partner Omega-Xis, Geo Stellar makes several human friends, including Bud and Luna. Their relationship isn’t great at first, with Bud in particular attempting to threaten Geo into going to school and making a fool of himself in the process. In this moment of weakness, the FM-ian Taurus offers him the power to get revenge, and he turns into Taurus Flame, the game’s first major boss.
This then happens again later on when Luna, jealous of Geo and Sonia’s relationship and resentful of her parents, gets the same treatment from FM-ian Ophicua, and gets similarly turned into another boss. I swear, these kids have never had to attend a peer pressure seminar before.
