Hands-On Preview: Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake Still Feels Like a Classic

I recently got to go hands-on with an early build of the freshly revealed Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake, and I gotta say, I didn’t see this one coming. Much like Ubisoft surprising us by going back to give Rayman Legends another chance at modern success, HoMM 3 is now getting this same opportunity.

For anyone that isn’t aware of this IP, it’s a very classic and iconic strategy/RPG franchise. And when I say “classic,” I really do mean it at this point. The original Heroes III came out back in 1999, which once again really highlights just how far back Ubisoft is going with this one.

I got to experience a couple of hours with this new remake, and I’m personally feeling very, very interested at this point. I think this remake is doing pretty much everything correctly so far, and fans of the series have a lot to look forward to when this one launches.

Before we dive into how it actually feels to play this remake in 2026, I think Ubisoft deserves some special shoutouts for how they’re handling this entire process. For one, it seems like the dev team here genuinely takes pride in and absolutely adores the 25+ years of support from the community that the game has seen since its original launch in 1999.

In fact, we were told that this 2026 remake is going to be compatible with community map creations from 1999, which is, frankly, well above and beyond what I think can and should be expected from any dev team ever. For the team to be going back in time 2.5 decades to pull forward custom player maps from a world gearing up for Y2K back in 1999 is genuinely unheard of, and a very cool thing, in my opinion.

But it doesn’t even stop there in terms of other “doing it right” examples. The devs are partnering directly with prominent modders for the original game, working with them to ensure Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake is addressing every type of player want/desire possible. And sure, it’s not completely unheard of for fans to be consulted on beloved video game projects, but my read here is that Ubisoft is genuinely going the extra mile to involve these players/fans as deeply as possible.

Going along with all of this, members of the original dev team from the 1999 release are involved in the remake as well, which again, is really not always a guarantee these days. There will also be updated versions of the Map Editor, as well as the Campaign Editor ready to go at launch, and modding support will also be alive and well via mod.io.
