Reviews for Zach Cregger's new Resident Evil movie have started pouring in, and it's looking like this latest adaptation is a resounding success – critically, at least.

Sitting at a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Resident Evil is currently the highest-rated video game movie of all time. It's not even close either, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 coming in second with 86%. Werewolves Within also achieved 86%, but the slightly lower user average of 60% puts it at number three.

Meanwhile, skipping right down to the bottom, we find Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark at number sixty-two. Just above this at 3% is House of the Dead, directed by – you guessed it – Uwe Boll. Wow, we've really come a long way from the days of dire video game movie adaptations, huh?

Resident Evil has, however, divided opinion in the run up to its release on 18th September, with some fans lamenting the change in direction for the story. Rather than directly adapting one of the games (because that's gone so well in the past), director and co-writer Zach Cregger instead opted to tell an original story set within Raccoon City, focusing on a medical courier called Bryan.

Obviously, people want to see a genuinely great Resident Evil story staring the likes of Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, and all of the other veterans covered from head to toe in plot armour, but that's what the games are for. We're honestly thrilled at the idea of an original story set within Capcom's world, and we can't wait to see it.
