Resident Evil Overtakes Sonic 3 As Highest-Rated Gaming Movie Of All Time

Reviews for Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie have just gone live and resulted in an incredibly rare near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

When it was first announced that Weapons director Zach Cregger was going to be making a movie based on Resident Evil, pretty much everyone agreed that it was a match made in heaven. Cregger’s unique style and sense of humour seemed perfect for the Resi-verse, especially if it was something original and not just a retelling.

That mindset stayed the same for most people, but there were some who doubted the movie and felt like it wasn’t worthy of the series’ name, which clearly had an effect on Cregger throughout the press tour. If you were one of those people, then you might not want to check how highly rated Resident Evil is on Rotten Tomatoes.

Earlier today, the Resident Evil movie review embargo lifted ahead of its release at the end of the week. With all of the discourse surrounding the movie and whether it deserves to even be called Resident Evil, these reviews are ones that a lot of people have been waiting on, and the final score doesn’t disappoint.

As of the time of writing, Resident Evil has a 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes after 56 reviews, with just one negative review in the whole lot. The reviews call Resident Evil “jaw-dropping”, “brutally clever”, “a horror blockbuster”, and largely praise it for managing to feel like an actual adaptation of the games.

These lofty reviews and the 98 percent score, mean that Resident Evil is now the highest-rated video game movie of all time, surpassing the bar set by Sonic 3 and its 86 percent score. Just below that is Werewolves Within (which barely counts, come on) at 86, and The Angry Birds Movie 2 at 72 percent, which sort of shows that the bar was never really that high.

No shade to Sonic 3, though. That film is still an absolute banger.

The review scores are especially funny when you consider all of the grief that Cregger has been getting over the past few months, despite clearly being a fan of Resident Evil. While he's since walked back some of his comments, it just proves that Cregger was right all along, and that just retelling Leon's story isn't the way to go. Let's just hope he's not been put off from making gaming movies.
