We're still in the midst of the Xbox Disc to Digital feature being tested by Xbox Insiders ahead of its full public rollout in the near future, and The Verge has been sharing some details this week about how it's managed to come to fruition.

In a nutshell, the outlet says that Xbox was exploring "the idea of true Xbox digital ownership in 2011", which could have included "digital gifting, recycling digital games, and the ability to swap discs at retail stores in exchange for a digital version". Some of the details were made public eventually, but others remained secret.

There were notorious announcements along these lines when the Xbox One was revealed in 2013 as well, such as that the console would always require an online connection, and that there were restrictions around used games.
