About five years ago, I was there for the announcement of Nivalis Nights at a PC Gamer showcase, a game that instantly piqued my interest. See, I went into this game expecting a cozy little cyberpunk life sim where I'd spend my evenings running restaurants, decorating my apartment, and generally pretending I had my life together in a video game. But I didn't expect a game that would occasionally make me stop and think, “Wow, that's actually funnily depressing.” Beneath all the neon lights and seemingly relaxing day-to-day activities is a surprisingly grounded, cynical little story about living in a city where everyone is just trying to get by one more day. And honestly? I think that's what makes Nivalis Nights so special.

It's not the kind of game that's constantly screaming for your attention, either. Instead, it lets you settle into Nivalis, meet its eccentric assortment of characters, build your businesses, and slowly uncover the more humanistic side of this neon-dripped city.

The writing can be funny, awkward, and occasionally downright cynical, but it rarely feels like it's trying too hard to make a point. Oddly enough, and dare I say it, it's ALMOST akin to the writing direction portrayed in Disco Elysium, of all things. After spending a healthy amount of time with it, I genuinely came away wondering how this game managed to fly so far under everyone else's radar; maybe it got sandwiched between a couple of anticipated releases like Control Resonant and Ace Combat 8? All I know for sure is that Nivalis Nights might just be one of 2026's most underrated hidden gems.

So you wake up, get alarmingly introduced to the game via your social AI construct, Ava, and then you peek outside at Nivalis for the first time, and it is exactly the sort of ridiculously over-the-top cyberpunk city you'd expect: towering skyscrapers with flashy neon lights, flying vehicles, and enough futuristic technology for a guy like us to manage an entire restaurant business seamlessly like a bona fide CEO who's probably going to lose his job at a Coldplay concert—yeah, okay, minus that bit. Yet the actual stories happening within this bustling city are surprisingly ordinary, like actual real-life lives without any sugar-coated nonsense.

The NPCs that inhabit it still have bad days, struggle to make ends meet, worry about their jobs, and generally try to figure out what they're doing with their lives. I say all this because, when I became infatuated with this game's inevitable release, the only thing I knew (at that time, obviously) was that I was getting another VA-11 Hall-A experience where I could talk to various people in-game and do the life-sim stuff on the side. And it does, but the ambition of this game is so profound, especially in the writing department.

Oddly enough, and dare I say it, it's ALMOST akin to the writing direction portrayed in Disco Elysium, of all things.

Nivalis Nights doesn't constantly throw some massive conspiracy or world-ending threat in your face like Cyberpunk 2077. Instead, it focuses more on the people who actually live in this city. You get to know them through conversations and everyday interactions, and those little moments often tell you more about Nivalis than some giant exposition dump ever could. Some characters are plain comedy acts, funny; some are miserable enough to make you pity them; some are genuinely strange (Miso Baron the GOAT); and others feel like the kind of person you could meet at a bar and immediately wonder how they've even survived this long.
