Alex Massé and team outline priorities for the first big Paralives update, from “buffing up the basics” to improved live and build modes.
The first big Paralives update is currently in the works after a "whirlwind" start for the indie life game, and it's sounding pretty packed. I've drifted loose from The Sims 4 in recent years as it's continued to chug along, and Paralives has proven itself as a stylized, heartfelt challenger that's reignited the spark in my heart for the genre. As we look to the future, Project Lead Alex Massé and the team at Paralives Studio say the original plan to release its first update by the end of 2026 has now been changed, but that's because there are so many welcome new features pulled from player wishlists.
Paralives Studio says its first big update "focuses on improving the basics of the gameplay experience before our team takes on exciting new features in future major updates, such as weather, seasons, gardening, pets, cars, world editing, and creation tools." It's been combing through "hundreds of thousands of feedback reports, emails, messages, and comments" in order to put together "a focused list of what's to come" for update one. The resulting list concentrates on gameplay fundamentals, improving existing features, and making Paralives "more fun and interesting."
First up are the basics. Additional ways to push conversations in certain directions will "make it easier to flirt, be mean, joke, get to know Parafolks, etc." Townies will have the ability to prompt you for a reaction through Together Cards, in order to make conversations feel more dynamic, and there will be new unlocks as you improve the level of the various relationship tags (such as friend, lover, or enemy).
Looking at interactions more broadly, Paralives Studio is working on "more interactions that can change the emotions of your Para, or that can be triggered by a specific emotion." It's also implementing "more interactions that Parafolks can decide to do autonomously, according to their personality." Further ramping up the nuances, there will be talking animations added for a range of group interactions like eating, watching TV, or sitting together.
"Right now, money is a bit too easy to come by," the developer notes. It's therefore tweaking starting balances and lots, the progression of salaries, and the price of items to rebalance the economic curve "so that it feels rewarding to earn money and be able to purchase new things." That includes higher-priced furniture and utility objects that are more efficient at achieving their benefits (and less likely to break) than the cheaper options, giving you that traditional Sims-style progression as you attain enough savings to upgrade your house.
The Jester vibe trait is being tweaked "so that the effects it has are more obvious," making it more of a humorous, playful characterization "rather than someone who is a bit erratic." Elsewhere, Community Center bundles are being improved to make rewards "more interesting," alongside a wider selection of possible life goals and their associated rewards, and better payouts for completing Townie requests.
There are quite a few new additions on the cards as well. Paralives Studio is currently working on "two new skills and interactions related to them," along with "a few more jobs in a field of work that we're eager to reveal." There will be extra Together Cards to expand conversational branching, including more that unlock with relationship progression. Fresh Story Cards, meanwhile, will introduce a wider range of options each night to direct and customize how your household might evolve.
