ARC Raiders is experimenting with a PvE-only matchmaking option, allowing players to explore the Rust Belt without worrying about being killed by other raiders.
Embark Studios has announced that a limited test will run from October 13 until October 20, just after the Frozen Trail update. During this time, players can freely switch between the regular PvPvE matchmaking and a separate PvE experience.
The latter completely disables player-to-player damage, leaving Raiders to scavenge, complete quests, and battle the ARC together. Solos, Duos, and Trios will all share the same PvE lobbies, since there’s no need to balance squads.
The decision comes after Embark discovered a large chunk of the community preferred to avoid fighting other players.
In the developer’s blog, they revealed that 37% of the player base primarily consists of “friendly co-op players,” compared to 34% who favor pure PvP, and 27% who mix the two. More significantly, 51% of surveyed players said they were interested in a dedicated PvE option.
There will be compromises to ensure that players can’t exploit the new mode. Loot value will be reduced in PvE, while PvPvE matches will receive slightly better baseline loot during the test. Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate, and Frigate will also remain exclusive to PvPvE.
Even the ARC will behave slightly differently. Machines can continue attacking downed players if they continue crawling after being knocked, although remaining still will cause them to lose interest.
However, Executive Producer Aleks warned that the October test doesn’t guarantee PvE will become permanent, as data and feedback will need to be reviewed.
