Well, folks, it’s been a ride. Not a particularly amazing ride, but a ride nonetheless. As recent social media posts from laid-off Build a Rocket Boy developers suggest, it seems the studio behind the not-so-stellar MindsEye is throwing in the towel and closing down for good.
As spotted by Polygon, BARB’s principal talent acquisition partner, Dan Hawkins, said on LinkedIn that he—”along with the rest of my colleagues at Build a Rocket Boy”—had to raise the “green banner,” i.e., the open for work tag on that social media platform. From his post, it follows that everyone at BARB has been laid off, but since Hawkins himself is staying to wrap things up and will be “seeing BARB through till the very end,” it could be that all of these layoffs haven’t yet been processed.
That also seems to be true in the case of lead weapon and prop artist Adam Ridsdale, who said that he and his colleagues at BARB are “facing redundancy,” which could indicate things are yet to fully go down at the studio.
At any rate, though, it appears Build a Rocket Boy is definitely shutting down, but we won’t be 100 percent sure until we get an official announcement.
Build a Rocket Boy has had a wild ride over the last year or so, following the release of its first game, MindsEye. This GTA killer built by Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies failed on every single account, and instead of learning from his mistakes, Benzies said the studio and the game’s failure were the result of internal and external sabotage, among other things.
These conspiracies do not seem to have been proven, given that BARB hasn’t made much of a comeback at all, despite a relaunch of MindsEye and other updates to the game.
