This year’s Tokyo Game Show was scheduled to be the biggest in the long-running event’s history, with activities scheduled to run for a full five days, as opposed to its usual four.
But a typhoon warning in Japan has curtailed activities, and in the interest of public safety, organisers have cancelled Monday’s event.
Sunday will still go ahead as previously planned, although TGS warns that depending on the weather conditions, certain activities may be cancelled.
As for Monday, it says: “Given concerns about potential disruptions to public transportation, we have decided to cancel the event for the entire day, prioritising the safety of all attendees, exhibitors, and staff, as well as ensuring everyone can return home safely.”
Those who already purchased tickets will be eligible for a full refund, although obviously it’s intensely disappointing for the show to be cut short like this.
Japan is currently celebrating “Silver Week”, which means many have time off work on Monday, hence the extended schedule.
TGS takes place in Japan’s Chiba prefecture, and just last month heavy flooding led to significant disruption in the area, sadly killing 10 people.
It’s understandable, then, why organisers would take a precautionary approach, with thousands expected to descend on the area for the show.
