Yesterday’s weekly Steam maintenance appears to have accidentally unearthed a ton of unrevealed information somehow, including unannounced games and details from those we knew about.
A website called Exophase that tracks Steam achievements was the main culprit, but the site’s owner said on ResetEra message boards that it “seems like a possible screw up on Valve’s end.”
“A bunch of games with achievements that should be private are accessible through the API right now and that’s why they got scanned into the site,” they said. “I usually never see games without an actual name pop up with achievements, yet over the past hour or so a bunch have.”
The info has since been taken down from the website, but not before spreading everywhere. The leak unveiled a slew of games that have yet to be revealed, including many with unfinished or incomplete titles. These games are presumably in development and waiting to be announced, but this leak has spilled the beans on several very interesting new games that could be coming soon.
But even for the games we know of, titles like Persona 6, Control Resonant, Fable, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Star Wars: Galactic Racers, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, and dozens more, there’s information in here that the game’s publishers and developers likely don’t want out in the world just yet.
One of the bigger ones, however, is the list of achievements for games like Kingdom Hearts 4 that reveals unannounced worlds in the Disney-owned IP-jumper. Potential surprise announcements for them have now been ruined.
Needless to say, this is a massive screw-up by someone, somewhere, whether it be Valve or elsewhere. There are a ton of spoilers now circulating online, and we won’t be posting any here, but they’re out there now. So, if you’re looking to avoid them, it’d be best to avoid social media or at least mute phrases that may concern you.
It’s an unfortunate event, especially for the studios working on games that they would have hoped to make for some cool “wow” moments at upcoming industry showcases like The Game Awards. Those announcements may hit a bit less hard now, but hopefully the games themselves will be great enough to stand on their own despite the leak.
