Magic has many wonderful uses in the world of Harry Potter, but just as Muggles can turn any new technology into a weapon, so too is magic often used for violence. There's not much in the way of magical combat in the first couple of books, but as the series — and its protagonist — matures, combat becomes much more common. By the end of J.K. Rowling's seven-book saga, it becomes clear who the greatest fighters in the Wizarding World really are.
Going by the combat skill displayed by this disparate collection of characters, many things contribute to a person's fighting abilities, from dedicated study to natural talent to wielding a particularly special weapon. Whether they were a gifted Gryffindor or a natural Slytherin, regardless of if they were fighting for love, justice, or personal gain, the following witches and witches are the finest fighters in the Harry Potter universe.
Based solely on Moody's achievements in the present-day Harry Potter timeline, he may not seem like much of a powerhouse. After all, he was bested by an Azkaban escapee and kept in a trunk for a year before abruptly dying at the beginning of The Deathly Hallows. However, it's important to note that Harry only interacted with the man in his retirement, and Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody's fearsome reputation speaks to just how tough a wizard he was during his prime.
Being the top Auror around is a mean feat at any time, but even more so during the Second Wizarding War and its aftermath. Considering how many Death Eathers Moody is known to have defeated in battle, he was clearly one of the best magical fighters Harry ever encountered. Though his death during the Battle of the Seven Potters may seem abrupt, let's not forget it was Voldemort who cast the Killing Curse that took him down. It's fitting that a man who mowed down so many of Voldemort's followers with ease could only be taken down by the Dark Lord himself.
Snape may not immediately come to mind as one of the greatest fighters in the Harry Potter books, as the Hogwarts Potions Master (and, briefly, Headmaster) is more recognizable for his intellect and cunning than for throwing himself into battle. Snape's brilliant mind is precisely the reason he is such a gifted fighter, though, as he possesses two unusual skills that he can employ to turn any duel in his favor.
First of all, as Harry discovers when he comes into the possession of the Half-Blood Prince's Potions book, Snape is known to devise his own offensive spells, which are likely to catch his enemy off-guard. Secondly, Snape is an accomplished Legilimens, meaning he can read his opponent's mind during a duel to discover what their next move is and prepare for it. Snape is a walking reminder that it takes brains to be a good fighter, not just brawn.
For some dark wizards, violence and murder are a means to an end. For Bellatrix Lestrange, however, they are the fun part. Few, if any, characters in the Harry Potter universe take such delight in unleashing pain on others like Bellatrix, and it is her savage nature that makes her so dangerous in a fight. When her bloodlust descends, Bellatrix is a brutal opponent who won't rest until she either kills her prey — like her own cousin, Sirius Black — or breaks them, like poor Frank and Alice Longbottom.
In many ways, Bellatrix is the opposite kind of fighter from Snape, who employs his intellect over his emotions, while Bellatrix prefers to act on her aggressive impulses. For a long time, that tactic worked for her, until it proved to be her undoing during the Battle of Hogwarts. It was her attempt to kill Ginny Weasley rather than simply overpower her that caused Molly Weasley to intervene and inflict a fatal blow on Bellatrix. If Bellatrix had greater self-control, she would've lived longer, but maybe then she wouldn't have been such a fearsome fighter.
