Near-Perfect FPS Games Nobody Knows About

Near-Perfect FPS Games Nobody Knows About

The FPS scene is dominated by massive franchises. You have your yearly Call of Duty releases, semi-frequent Battlefield games, and plenty of free-to-play options, from Apex Legends to Overwatch. With these major titles being the focus of the genre conversation, it's not easy for smaller games to capture any of the limelight.

With that said, a list like this can certainly help. The games listed here are all largely unknown. A couple have managed to earn a "cult" status, but for the most part, these are all FPS games that nobody really knows about, and that's a shame, because each of them is an excellent title that genre fans can enjoy.

Starting with a weird one, anyone who's played Black Ice will be just as baffled as I am as to why this game isn't more popular. Heavily inspired by the likes of Tron and System Shock, the game is set in a digital world full of bright neon grids and chunky 3D models. It's an open-world RPG and a wildly creative FPS, and your job is to traverse the world and take out the evil corporations fighting for control of it.

For a game still in Early Access, Black Ice has a lot of things going for it already. The world and enemy designs are pitch-perfect, there are lots of weird and creative guns to find, and the game's randomization elements keep things fresh. Best of all, you can play the whole thing with friends through online or local co-op, which is a blast.

If you're familiar with Neon White and its fast-paced, hilariously addictive combat, I Am Your Beast is like that, but without the hyperfocus on speed-running levels. Each mission is a 2–3 minute excursion made up of tiny combat arenas. Unlike Neon White, you play a retired super spy on the run, hiding out in the woods. Needless to say, things don't go well for anyone who rings your doorbell.

Although you'll occasionally have other objectives, levels in I Am Your Beast usually require you to kill every enemy on screen. As you do, you'll realize just how much variety this combat system offers. From throwing knives to beehives, bombs to backstabs, your goal is to wipe out all your enemies as quickly and efficiently as possible. A clean run will not only advance you to further levels, but might also give you more information about the spy you play as, dishing out lore in a creative and engrossing way that is surprisingly effective at connecting you with the game's killing-machine protagonist.

This is at least the fourth time I've written about Echo Point Nova, and for good reason. It may not look like much on the surface, but the movement and shooting mechanics on offer here combine to make one of the most thrilling and freeing shooter experiences in recent years.
