The wait for a new traditional side-scrolling Metroid game after Fusion was a long and agonizing one. Nintendo has no intention of doing that to us again. It's been five years since Metroid Dread ended an almost 20-year wait for a follow-up to Fusion, and today its sequel was revealed during a loaded Nintendo Direct.
It turns out the leaks about the next 2D Metroid game were true. Now confirmed, the next game will be called Ravenous, and it will indeed be a direct sequel to Dread, even though it felt a lot like that story was neatly wrapped up at the end of that game. No complaints from me if Nintendo is choosing to untie that bow. Dread is my favorite Metroid game ever, 2D or otherwise, so if Ravenous is more of that, I am very much here for it.
Not only did Nintendo give us our first look at Ravenous, but it also confirmed it will release exclusively on Switch 2 on January 28 next year. Here's hoping that date doesn't keep getting pushed like it did for Metroid Prime 4, and that this isn't a Dread situation where the concept was dreamt up in the mid 2000s and the game didn't actually end up releasing for another 15 years.
Our first look at Ravenous showed Samus battling new enemies as the protagonist narrated the trailer, vowing to escape the moon on which she's trapped. The reveal also confirmed that Samus will need to consume her enemies to survive, hence the game name, Ravenous.
Nintendo also showed off two Ravenous amiibo. Another figure for Samus in the blue armor she debuted in Dread, and a larger Chozo statue amiibo. There's also a Metroid Suit amiibo, the look Samus debuted towards the end of the trailer. That one appears to be exclusively available with a special edition of the game that comes with a physical copy and a SteelBook.
