Kojima Productions has issued a new statement about its relationship with PlayStation after Sony recently opted to cancel the developer's upcoming project, Physint. Xbox Game Studios quickly picked up the publishing rights for Physint in the wake of PlayStation's decision, saving the project from full cancellation.
Physint was originally announced under the PlayStation banner, marking Hideo Kojima's return to the stealth genre for the first time in over a decade. However, after a few years in development, Sony recently announced it had ended its partnership to publish the game. After taking time to find a new publisher, Physint landed at Xbox Game Studios. This gave Xbox an easy win at an awkward time, especially given the unpopularity of some of Sony's decisions of late. Much has been made of the move and potential reasons why, and Kojima Productions has provided a new update on the matter.
In a statement posted on X, Kojima Productions acknowledged online rumors regarding its relationship with PlayStation after the company opted to cancel Physint (before Xbox picked it up), as well as rumors about Death Stranding sales and the studio's overall profitability. The developer says that while it normally wouldn't comment on these matters, these stories have "reached beyond the studio and have touched our fans, our creative partners, and colleagues we have worked alongside with for three decades." It encourages fans to take claims regarding these matters "with a dose of scepticism."
However, it does state that PlayStation dropping Physint was "a serious situation for the studio with a range of potentially significant implications," and that while the speculation may have caused fans to become worried about its future, " the studio is in a healthy, profitable state, development for Physint continues to move forward with XBOX, and our relationship with PlayStation remains strong."

It remains to be seen whether Kojima Productions is keeping the door open to a potential PS5 version of Physint with this statement, or whether it is simply maintaining an amicable relationship for future collaboration. The latter seems more likely, especially with Xbox Game Studios jumping in to save the project. While a PlayStation release is technically not impossible, Xbox console exclusivity feels inevitable given the circumstances.
There is no indication of when fans can expect to hear more about Physint. In the wake of the Xbox Game Studios announcement, Physint finally revealed its lead actor, with Bill Skarsgård taking the role. It'll be very exciting to see what Kojima has in store for his big return to the stealth genre.
