I should probably preface this by saying I’ve never played a Persona title before. That isn’t to say I haven’t wanted to. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Persona 5 after all, but just never got around to playing it for myself.
So, when I heard that Persona 4 Revival was going to be shown off at the Sega Summer Showcase, well, I thought, maybe this is my chance to get into the series! Better late than never, right?
What I didn’t predict, however, was that in the roughly 4 hours that I spent at the entire showcase, almost half of my time was going to be taken up with Persona 4 Revival.
Yes, I got to the end of the demo, a demo that I don’t think many other people actually reached the end of, and then felt mighty disheartened when I couldn’t see what was beyond that darn castle door! You know a game is good when it leaves you hungry for more, right? Persona 4 Revival really hooked me, and honestly, I might be a Persona fan now!
So, I had the opportunity to play 3 distinct segments of Persona 4 Revival. The first introduced me to the concept of Personas, warrior manifestations of a person's inner self, who can be summoned to do battle, kind of like Stands from JoJo.
I was a little confused at the beginning, as this slice skipped the first section of the story, immediately starting in another world, with the main protagonist facing off against his first nightmarish enemy.
However, from what I gathered, there have been some disappearances and murders in the real world. When Narukami discovers the Midnight Channel, another world that can be entered through a TV screen, he and his friends set out to uncover their Personas and tackle this terrifying mystery from within the digital plane.
