The remake of the original Witcher game is on hold for now, while its developer focuses on The Witcher 3’s upcoming expansion.
CD Projekt Red announced back in October 2022 that a “full-fledged remake” of The Witcher had entered production, with Polish studio Fool’s Theory leading on development.
Earlier this year, however, CD Projekt Red announced that The Witcher 3 would be getting a third expansion, titled Songs of the Past, with a release set for 2027.
Songs of the Past is also being developed by Fool’s Theory, leading some to wonder how this affected the status of The Witcher remake.
CD Projekt Red has now confirmed to Gamespot that the remake has not been cancelled, but has been put temporarily on hold while the studio focuses on getting Songs of the Past finished.
The company explained that because The Witcher remake shares some of its architecture with The Witcher 4, that game’s development needs to progress more before work on The Witcher remake can fully continue.
“[The] Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4,” a spokesperson for CD Projekt Red told the publication.
“As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies.
