Sony, one of the world’s most iconic consumer electronics companies, will not attend 2027’s Consumer Electronics Show.
Reporting from Nikkei (via JapanTimes) reveals the Japanese giant has pulled out of next year’s Las Vegas event, scheduled to take place in January.
The firm has been an ever-present at the convention since its inaugural edition in 1967, meaning this will bring an end to a 60 year run.
But it’s not a massive surprise: its 2026 presence hinged on its partnership with Honda on the Afeela EV car, which has since been scrapped.
While Sony continues to make consumer electronics like cameras and headphones, it sold off its iconic Bravia television division to Chinese manufacturer TCL earlier this year.
The firm sees its future in entertainment, and is dividing its attention between movies, music, and, of course, games.
Its PlayStation brand is the market leader for consoles, although it does face stiff competition from Nintendo. Meanwhile, its Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie just broke records earlier this year.
Sony has preferred to invest in emerging entertainment categories like anime ahead of consumer electronics of late, purchasing streaming platform Crunchyroll.
